no hamster balls
Plastic balls intended for hamsters are EXTREMELY dangerous for chinchillas and should not be used.
wheels
Wheels for chinchillas should be made of metal (not plastic or wood) and should be at least 14 inches in diameter. Smaller diameter wheels can cause damage to their backs.
chews
Many commercially-available small animal chews and chew toys are not safe for chinchillas. Properly-prepared wood sticks and chews are best. A list of safe woods can be found at the Sunshine Chinchilla website.
no paper, please
Paper products can cause illness and death and should not be used. Some chinchilla-specific cardboard products may be safe, but check with your exotic vet.
playtime
Playtime outside of the cage is not necessary for chinchillas to have a happy life! If you choose to allow your chinchilla to leave their cage, ensure that the area is fully chinchilla-proofed. Limit time outside the cage to prevent overheating and heat stroke.
the great outdoors
Please do not bring your chinchilla outdoors. In addition to the many predators in the wild, the risk of escape is real!
new and novel
Prey animals do not need or want new and novel experiences. Routine and stability are the keys to a happy life for your chinchillas.
